German President Frank Walter Steinmeier has dissolved the Bundestag and announced that early elections will be held on February 23, 2025. The German president stated that he decided to dissolve the parliament because no agreement could be reached on a majority for a new and stable government after consultations with party leaders and explained, “It is precisely in difficult times like these that stability requires a government that can act and a reliable majority in parliament. That is why I believe that elections are the right path for the good of our country.”
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz dismissed Free Democratic Party (FDP) Finance Minister Christian Lindner on November 6 after a long disagreement on how to close a multi-billion euro budget deficit. The coalition government fell as a result of the FDP withdrawing its ministers from the government. Following the collapse of the government, the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Greens and the main opposition Christian Union (CDU/CSU) parties agreed to hold early elections on February 23, 2025.
