An 18-karat gold toilet created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan sold for $12.1 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York. The 101-kilogram piece, titled America, was purchased by an undisclosed collector.
Cattelan has said the work satirizes extreme wealth in the United States. A second gold toilet he created in 2016 was stolen from Blenheim Palace in England and has never been recovered, with authorities believing it was melted down
