Greek artists took to the streets to protest a presidential decree that would consider art school diplomas as equivalent to high school diplomas. Over 2,000 artists, students, and set workers gathered in Syntagma Square in Athens on the second day of a 48-hour strike. The demonstration was lively, with protesters chanting “Government wears down culture, prevent decrees” and holding banners that read “Art is science” and “End the destruction of art.”
The artists, already hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, said they would escalate their actions if the government did not reverse its decision. The artists accused the government of not providing sufficient support during the pandemic and said the decree was an attempt to further discredit their profession.
The strike caused the suspension of 15 TV series productions and the closure of many theaters, while art school education was disrupted. Protests took place in several cities including Athens, Thessaloniki, Larissa, and Patras.
