Greek Cypriots Receive Iron Dome from Israel

The Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCASC) has received its first shipment of Israel’s Iron Dome air defense system as part of its military modernization efforts. Initially described as a replacement for aging Russian TOR and BUK systems, the move follows the lifting of the U.S. arms embargo and increased defense cooperation with Western countries.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) criticized the arms buildup, stating it undermines diplomatic efforts for a peaceful resolution to the Cyprus issue and escalates regional tensions. TRNC officials noted joint exercises with Israel and tests against F-16s as indications of ambitions beyond defense.

Southern Cyprus is also preparing to receive combat helicopters from France and advance plans to replace Russian-made T-80 tanks with new models.
