Groundwater Depletion in Konya Plain Triggers Rise in Sinkholes

Groundwater levels in Türkiye’s Konya Plain have dropped by up to 20 meters in some areas over the past year, leading to an increase in sinkhole formations. Prof. Dr. Fetullah Arık, Director of the Obruk Application and Research Center at Konya Technical University, warned that the continued intensive use of groundwater and ongoing drought are contributing to this alarming trend. Arık noted that the number of sinkholes, particularly in the Karapınar district and surrounding areas, is rising, with over 600 sinkholes deeper than one meter already recorded. He urged residents to remain vigilant, as signs such as turbid water and underground noises could indicate the imminent formation of new sinkholes.
