Unidentified individuals have allegedly opened the grave of former Syrian President Hafez Assad in his hometown of Kardaha, Latakia, and stolen his remains. Images circulating on social media show the grave empty. Hafez Assad, who ruled Syria for three decades, died in 2000 and was succeeded by his son Bashar Assad. The site had already been set on fire following the fall of the Assad regime. The motives and perpetrators remain unknown.
