Hamas’ military wing, the Izzeddin al-Qassam Brigades, handed over Israeli civilians Ohad Ben Ami, Eli Sharabi and Or Levy to the Red Cross in Deir al-Balah in the center of the Gaza Strip in the 5th exchange as part of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement that began on January 19 in the Gaza Strip.
The prisoners were given documents proving their release on a platform decorated with a banner reading “We are the flood, we are the next day” and then sent on their way to be handed over to Israeli forces in Gaza.
As part of the prisoner swap, Israel is expected to release a total of 183 Palestinians, 18 of whom were sentenced to life imprisonment, 54 to long-term prison sentences, and 111 of whom have been held since October 7, 2023, while 7 will be deported after being released.
