Hamas’ military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, released 5 Israeli citizens as part of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement that began in the Gaza Strip on January 19.

Israeli-Ethiopian dual citizen Avera Mengistu and Israeli-Austrian dual citizen Tal Shoham were handed over to Red Cross officials in Rafah this morning, while three Israeli prisoners, Eliya Cohen, Omer Shem-Tov and Omer Wenkert, were handed over to Red Cross officials in the Nusayrat Refugee Camp in central Gaza at noon.

Another Israeli prisoner, Hisham al-Sayed, will be released in Gaza City later in the day without a ceremony.

Israel is expected to release a total of 602 Palestinians, 50 of whom were sentenced to life imprisonment and 445 of whom were arrested after October 7, 2023. More than 100 Palestinians will be deported after their release.
