A severe heat wave in Karachi, Pakistan, has claimed 568 lives over the past six days. With temperatures soaring above 40°C (104°F) and humidity pushing the heat index to 49°C (120°F), the death toll continues to rise. The Edhi ambulance service reported receiving 30-40 bodies daily, with 141 deaths occurring on Tuesday alone.
Dr. Imran Sarwar Sheikh, head of the emergency department at Karachi Civil Hospital, reported 267 heat stroke cases from Sunday to Thursday, with 12 fatalities. “Most patients were in their 60s or 70s, though some were as young as their 20s,” Dr. Sheikh noted, advising the public to stay hydrated and wear light clothing.
In response to the extreme heat, authorities have established cooling centers and camps across the city.
