Heatwave, drought incite forest fires in southwest France

The ongoing forest fires in the Gironde region of France have burned 7,400 hectares so far. Firefighting crews from Germany, Romania and Greece are also participating in extinguishing efforts. Authorities have declared that the southwest of the country is at high risk of new fires due to high temperatures and growing drought. More than 10,000 people have been evacuated due to the fire.

France has reached the highest levels of carbon pollution from forest fires between June and August since 2003, the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service in Europe (CAMS) reported.
