A 3-kilometer-long fissure near the Sundhnukur Volcano in southwestern Iceland has become active, emitting lava and ash into the air, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office. The eruption poses no immediate threat to Grindavik town, evacuated after a previous eruption late last year, or the nearby power plant. The popular Blue Lagoon thermal spa was closed, and visitors were evacuated to hotels. Coast Guard officials noted that the explosion, starting at 06:00 local time, occurred in the same region as the eruption on December 18 last year.
