Biden Unveils Citizenship Plan for 500,000 Immigrant Spouses

As the U.S. presidential elections approach, President Joe Biden unveiled a new program enabling at least 500,000 immigrants married to U.S. citizens to gain citizenship. Speaking at the White House, Biden criticized former President Donald Trump’s harsh immigration policies and emphasized his commitment to resolving immigration issues.

The program will benefit spouses married as of June 17 who have lived in the U.S. for at least 10 years. Additionally, 50,000 individuals under 21, whose parent is married to a U.S. citizen, will be eligible. The initiative, expected to launch in the coming months, is anticipated to primarily assist Mexican citizens.

Biden also plans to expedite the visa process for highly-skilled undocumented immigrants with U.S. degrees or job offers. However, individuals with a criminal history or deemed a public safety threat will be excluded from the program.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the recent peace talks in Istanbul have brought a new dimension to diplomatic efforts on Ukraine and proposed a leaders’ summit hosted by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. “A summit with leaders from Russia, Ukraine, and the US could help achieve a long-term ceasefire,” he said.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Kyiv with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s ongoing diplomatic efforts, stating that President Erdoğan has been working actively since the war began. He added that talks in Istanbul on May 16 led to concrete results, including a prisoner swap.

Fidan shared insights from his prior visit to Moscow and said Russia is open to further talks on June 2. He stressed the importance of continuing momentum and involving international actors to build common ground for peace.

Fidan is also scheduled to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Andriy Yermak, Rustem Umerov, and representatives of the Crimean Tatar and Gagauz Turkish communities.
