Iftar at Bosnia’s famed Yellow Fortress

With the arrival of Ramadan in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Muslims flocked to the historical Yellow Fortress to break their fast in the open air. The ‘iftar’ time announced by shooting cannon in Yellow Fortress, where traditions that have been going on for years are kept alive.

The tradition of shooting cannons special for the month of Ramadan dates back to the period of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. While artillery was banned after the Second World War and the arrival of the Communists, artillery was resumed after the 1990 elections.

The fortress, which has an impressive view of the capital Sarajevo, also attracts thousands of tourists every year.
