A 1,500-year-old cistern near the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque in Istanbul, used as a spa under the Navitas Spa Cistern brand linked to the Hilton Hotel, was sealed by Fatih Municipality for unauthorized modifications and damage to the historic site.
Despite a 2022 restoration approval, the cistern was illegally transformed into a massage and jacuzzi parlor, leading to structural damage. Authorities repeatedly warned the business to remove the alterations, but after continued noncompliance, it was shut down following a decision by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Fatih Municipality Building Control Directorate.
