On Tuesday, Indonesian students dressed in anti-radioactive costumes protested Japan’s contentious proposal to dump more than a million tons of nuclear-contaminated wastewater into the Pacific Ocean. Protesters displayed posters illustrating dangerous nuclear waste in front of the Japanese Embassy in Jakarta. Japan’s decision has also enraged local fishermen and sparked considerable concern among numerous countries and international organizations.
“We demanded that Japan should not release the waste into the Pacific Ocean because there are countries bordering the ocean such as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, South Korea, the Philippines, China, and Indonesia. I do not want it to pollute the fish in our ocean ecosystem. Our ocean is vast and rich.” said Kevin Sidabutar, the coordinator of the protest.
