Iran to Hold Presidential Elections in 50 Days Following President’s Death

After the tragic death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash, Iran declared a state of emergency. The country’s administration has been temporarily handed over to First Vice President Mohammed Muhbir, as approved by Supreme Leader Khamenei.

Hadi Tahan Nazif, spokesperson for Iran’s Supreme Electoral Council, confirmed that presidential elections will be held within the next 50 days to ensure continuity of governance. In the interim, Vice President Muhbir will lead the government.

An emergency meeting chaired by Muhbir discussed the logistics of returning the remains of President Raisi and Foreign Minister Hussein Amir Abdullahian to Tehran, as well as funeral arrangements. The new president, to be elected within 50 days, will serve a four-year term.
