Iranian woman takes mandatory break in Turkey as her truck engine frozen

In the Horasan district of Erzurum, many vehicles froze as the air temperature dropped to minus 20 degrees. Among the frozen vehicles, there was an Iranian woman truck driver who pulled her truck full of cargo to the oil facility in the district at night. Elnaz Aghayi, a long-distance driver carrying cargo from Iran to Turkey, stated that she loaded aluminum from Iran to Kocaeli and received a different load from Istanbul to Iran, and said that she took a mandatory break in Erzurum because the engine of the truck froze. “I started the truck after I got up in the morning, but the truck did not start due to the extreme cold. I called for aid from other truck drivers, they are on the way,” she said. “I am a married mother of two, I have a 23-year-old son and a 13-year-old daughter. My husband is self-employed. I love to ride. Heavy winter conditions are a problem for us. In the summer, this problem disappears. As I experienced today, my vehicle froze. We will solve this problem with my friends,” Elnaz Aghayi added.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the recent peace talks in Istanbul have brought a new dimension to diplomatic efforts on Ukraine and proposed a leaders’ summit hosted by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. “A summit with leaders from Russia, Ukraine, and the US could help achieve a long-term ceasefire,” he said.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Kyiv with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s ongoing diplomatic efforts, stating that President Erdoğan has been working actively since the war began. He added that talks in Istanbul on May 16 led to concrete results, including a prisoner swap.

Fidan shared insights from his prior visit to Moscow and said Russia is open to further talks on June 2. He stressed the importance of continuing momentum and involving international actors to build common ground for peace.

Fidan is also scheduled to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Andriy Yermak, Rustem Umerov, and representatives of the Crimean Tatar and Gagauz Turkish communities.
