Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan won Romania’s presidential runoff with 54.09% of the vote, defeating far-right candidate George Simion, who secured 45.91%. Voter turnout was 64.72%, according to the Romanian Permanent Electoral Authority.
Dan, 55, ran as an independent on a pro-European Union and pro-NATO platform, pledging anti-corruption reforms and continued military aid to Ukraine. Celebrating the result, Dan stated, “Romanians who want radical change won the elections,” and called for “hope and patience” amid upcoming economic challenges.
His victory is seen as a boost for pro-EU forces, avoiding a potential shift toward the Euroskeptic bloc led by Hungary and Slovakia. Dan now faces the task of appointing a new prime minister and restoring stability after the resignation of Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu and the collapse of the pro-Western coalition government.
