The Israeli Defense Forces published an internal document from 2002 on Tuesday, in which the Military Intelligence Directorate warned that Syria might be attempting to launch a military nuclear program. The intelligence assessment was compiled five years before Israel struck a secret Syrian nuclear reactor being built in the Deir Ezzor area on September 6, 2007, in a mission known as Operation Orchard. The publication came 15 years after a major airstrike that effectively destroyed Syria’s nuclear program. The attack was reportedly the result of Israeli consultations with the administration of then-US President George W. Bush.
