A forest fire that began on February 26 in Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture, has burned 2,600 hectares and remains uncontained after a week.
Authorities issued evacuation warnings for 4,596 residents, with over 1,200 people in shelters and thousands more staying in hotels or with relatives.
Firefighting efforts continue with over 2,000 personnel from 14 prefectures, supported by the Japan Self-Defense Forces. Dry weather persists, but rain or snow is expected later, which could aid containment efforts.
