Japan flooding prompts evacuation of thousands

Heavy rains caused flash floods across Japan, particularly in the Shizuoka province, and the city of Hamamatsu in the country. Water levels in the rivers have reached critical levels, authorities said. Evacuation warning was issued for 408,933 people living in 172,698 households in risky areas.

Rail operator JR has announced that services between Kakegawa Station and Hamamatsu Station on the Tokaido high-speed rail line will be temporarily suspended as of 14:00 local time.

Lone Survivor in India Plane Crash That Killed 204

An Air India plane crashed into a university hostel in Ahmedabad seconds after takeoff, killing 204 people and injuring 41. One passenger, Ramesh Vishwaskumar Bucharvada, survived and is being treated.

The Boeing 787 crashed after climbing just 190 meters. The plane had issued a Mayday call but lost contact soon after. It was carrying 242 people, including 169 Indian, 53 British, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian nationals.

Indian PM Modi called the incident “heartbreaking.” UK PM Starmer and Portugal’s PM Montenegro expressed condolences, while King Charles was briefed. The victims include 169 Indians, 53 British, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian.
