Japan experienced its hottest June on record, with average temperatures reaching 24.7°C, 2.34°C above the historical norm, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Coastal waters also hit record highs, rising 1.2°C above average since 1982.
Experts linked the heat to persistent high-pressure systems and noted early seasonal shifts. Mount Fuji’s snow arrived late, and cherry trees failed to bloom fully. Authorities warned the extreme heat will continue into next month.
Between June 16–22, 18 people died of heatstroke and over 8,600 were hospitalized.
