Japan’s Ishikawa Earthquake Toll Rises to 48

The aftermath of Japan’s 7.6 magnitude earthquake in Ishikawa Prefecture continues to unfold, with a rising death toll now reaching 48, as confirmed by state authorities. The quake, which also impacted Niigata, Fukui, Toyama, and Gifu provinces, prompted a tsunami warning that has since been lifted.

In Wajima, where severe destruction prevailed, search and rescue operations persist among the 25 collapsed buildings. Efforts by the fire brigade successfully controlled fires in over 200 structures, but around 500 individuals remain stranded at Wajima’s Noto Airport due to road closures and runway damage.

Suzu faced significant devastation, including a temple, 53 houses, and damaged cemeteries, alongside sunken boats in the harbor. Kanazawa reported tilted and damaged buildings, leading to traffic closures, while Nanao experienced highway landslides and structural harm in Himi city.
