Juvenile Spur Shark on Display at Akdeniz University

A juvenile spur shark (Squalus acanthias), caught in fishermen’s nets off the coast of Antalya Kemer in April, is now being exhibited at the Akdeniz University Faculty of Science. This shark is part of the Vertebrate Animals Museum, which features a vast collection of specimens, including birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish.

The spur shark, one of the most common shark species in Turkish waters, is now showcased in the museum’s foyer. These sharks, which can grow up to 200 cm and weigh up to 10 kg, play a crucial role in the marine ecosystem by preying on invasive species like lionfish. The species has been listed as “Endangered” on the IUCN Red List since 2006.
