Kazakhs protest rise in LPG prices

Protests broke out in many cities following the rise in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices in Kazakhstan. During the protest in Almaty, the country’s largest city, the demonstrators were intervened with tear gas and stun bombs, and a police vehicle was set on fire.

The government commission announced that the price of natural gas in the Mangistau region will be reduced and the liter price will be determined as 50 tenge. However, the people did not agree with this decision and demanded the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to come to the region. President of Kazakhstan Tokayev called for restraint in his speech to the protesters. Tokayev said, “I ask you once again to be prudent and not to succumb to provocations from within and without. The government will not resign, but we need mutual trust and dialogue, not a conflict,” he said.
