The winner of the Taiwanese presidential election, in which 70 percent of the voters participated, has become Lai Ching-te, the candidate of the ruling Democratic Development Party, by receiving 40 percent of the votes. Hsiao Mei-chin will be the assistant to Lai, and the two will be sworn in on May 20.
Lai Ching-te is an advocator of the independence of Taiwan, which is in a sovereignty dispute with China.
