Lebanon Marks 5 Years Since Beirut Port Explosion

 

Lebanon commemorated the 218 victims of the August 4, 2020, explosion at the Port of Beirut with a ceremony. Families, holding Lebanese flags and photos of loved ones, observed a moment of silence at 6:07 PM. Many expressed frustration over the lack of accountability.

Five years after the explosion, the investigation remains stalled due to political interference. Lebanese authorities promised quick justice, but judicial delays and legal objections have paralyzed the inquiry. President Aoun and Prime Minister Salam vowed accountability but did not attend the ceremony. The blast, caused by a fire in a warehouse of explosives, killed 218 and injured 6,500, leaving widespread destruction
