Canada’s ruling Liberal Party, led by new Prime Minister Mark Carney, won the general election with 43.5% of the vote and 168 seats, according to unofficial results. Falling short of a majority, Carney is expected to form a minority government.
In his victory speech, Carney criticized U.S. President Donald Trump, saying, “Trump wants our land, our water, our country — that will never happen.” He pledged to protect Canadian sovereignty and reduce dependence on the U.S.
Carney replaced Justin Trudeau last month and called early elections, with 28 million Canadians casting votes.
