To protest Russia’s attack on Ukraine, Lithuanian Olympic champion swimmer Ruta Meilutyte swam in the red-dyed pond near the Russian Embassy in Vilnius. Meilutyte said that she wanted to draw the world’s attention to the Russian occupation of Ukraine and the genocide. Meilutyte swam across the pond despite the snowfall.
The paint used to dye the pond red is harmless to nature, the same paint used on the Vilnia river on St. Patrick’s Day, local officials said.
