In London, subway workers went on strike demanding increased salaries and improvements in subways. Led by the Railway, Maritime and Transport (RMT) Union, the 24-hour strike began after the end of the 4-day Platinum Jubilee celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II’s 70th anniversary on the throne. While many subway stations across London were closed, nearly 4,000 personnel joined the strike.
Transport for London (TFL), the operator company responsible for transportation in London, warned Londoners about the transportation disruptions to be experienced as of 08:00. The strike was reportedly triggered by TFL’s recent firing of 600 jobs, citing costs.
