French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized France’s nuclear deterrent as a key element of European security and called for greater European defense autonomy.
Addressing the nation, Macron warned of escalating global threats, including Russia’s military expansion, cyberattacks, and election interference. He reaffirmed France’s commitment to Ukraine, stating that European support must continue until a negotiated peace is secured.
Macron announced a meeting of European chiefs of staff in Paris next week to discuss security strategies and hinted that European forces might play a role in ensuring peace in Ukraine. While affirming NATO ties, he stressed that Europe’s future should not be dictated by Washington or Moscow.
He also criticized the U.S. plan to impose tariffs on European goods, calling it harmful to both economies and vowing a response. Despite increasing defense investments, Macron assured that taxes would not be raised.
