The Wakayama District Court in Japan sentenced 25-year-old defendant Ryuji Kimura, who threw a homemade explosive at former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who was visiting Saikazaki Fishing Port to give an election speech in 2023 and injured 1 police officer and 1 civilian, to 10 years in prison.
“Investigations have proven that the explosive had lethal force and that the defendant intentionally threw the explosive knowing that former Prime Minister Kishida and other people could die,” court officials explained.
Lawyers of Kimura, who was arrested at the scene, had requested a 3-year sentence for wounding, claiming that their client had no intention of killing anyone during the trial. Prosecutors, on the other hand, had requested a 15-year sentence, arguing that the attack was a terrorist act that threatened the foundations of democracy and the lives of many people.
Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated while giving an election speech in the city of Nara in 2022.
