A massive forest fire in Western Canada, covering an area of 10,000 hectares, has prompted the evacuation of nearly the entire town of Fort Nelson in British Columbia. The fire, which started on Friday, has also caused smoke to spread across five Canadian states and parts of the USA. British Columbia’s Minister of Emergency Management and Climate, Bowinn Ma, expressed concern over the challenging conditions in the northern part of the province, citing the absence of heavy rain in forecasts and the potential for intensifying winds. A temporary accommodation site with 200 rooms has been set up for evacuees, with authorities closely monitoring the situation in Fort Nelson over the next critical 48 hours.
Additionally, two forest fires have been reported in Alberta, including one near Fort McMurray, which saw a massive evacuation of 90,000 people in a 2016 wildfire. Fire crews and helicopters are actively working to contain these fires. Train services have been halted in parts of British Columbia and Alberta due to the fires, although there have been no disruptions reported in the region’s oil and gas extraction activities.
