Massive Forest Fire in Southern France Burns 16,000 Hectares

A forest fire in the Aude region of southern France has burned 16,000 hectares since breaking out on Tuesday. The fire, the largest in France since 1949, has affected 15 municipalities, with authorities mobilizing over 2,100 firefighters and 500 vehicles to combat the blaze. French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau called it the country’s biggest fire in decades. The fire has destroyed or damaged 25 homes, and a 60-year-old woman died after refusing to evacuate. Temporary accommodation centers have been set up for evacuees.
