Membership of NATO not possible until september, Finland’s Niinistö said

President of Finland Sauli Niinistö met with President of the European Parliament (EP) Roberta Metsola. Answering the questions of the journalists after the meeting, President of Finland Niinistö, referring to the meeting held yesterday between Turkey and Sweden at the NATO headquarters regarding his country’s NATO membership, said, “Basically, there was not much progress in the meeting, but we are satisfied that the discussion is open.” Answering the journalist’s question about whether Finland could become a member of the alliance by September, Niinistö said, “My impression is that serious discussion are going on, but it is not possible for us to become NATO member by September.” Niinistö said, “Getting the opportunity for everyone to come together is already progress. It took quite a long time. “We agreed to continue the discussions,” he said.

On the other hand, the representatives of Turkey, Sweden and Finland, who had a meeting at the NATO Headquarters in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, discussed the security concerns that Turkey brought to the agenda in order to make progress in the process of joining the alliance between Finland and Sweden.

Andriy Portnov, former aide to ex-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, was shot dead in Madrid’s upscale Pozuelo de Alarcon district. Spanish authorities say unidentified gunmen opened fire as the 52-year-old was dropping off his children at school, striking him in the back and head before fleeing.

Portnov, a former MP and lawyer, fled Ukraine with Yanukovych in 2014, briefly returned in 2019, and was later sanctioned by the U.S. for alleged judicial corruption.
