Hundreds of members of the Coalition of Democratic Organizations (CODUC) raided the town hall in the city of Las Margaritas, located in the Mexican state of Chiapas. The angry crowd raided the municipality with stones and sticks, smashed the windows and doors of the building and kidnapped 31 people inside. They also clashed with the police and damaged the police vehicles.
Las Margaritas Mayor Bladimir Hernandez said in a statement that the villagers demanded 12 million pesos from the municipality for landscaping, and they carried out this act of violence when their demands were not met. Arguing that the municipality’s budget is not enough to meet the demand of the villagers, Hernandez called for a dialogue with CODUC to resolve the issue.
Local officials launched an investigation into the incident.
