Mozambique Election Protests Leave 21 Dead

Protests erupted in Mozambique after the Constitutional Council approved disputed presidential election results, confirming Daniel Chapo of the ruling FRELIMO party as the winner. Demonstrators in Maputo and Beira looted shops, burned vehicles, and attacked public infrastructure.

Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda reported 21 deaths, including two police officers, and 25 vehicles, 11 police stations, and a prison damaged. At least 86 prisoners escaped, and over 230 violent incidents were recorded in 24 hours. Protests have persisted since the October 9 election, with opposition supporters alleging fraud. Security forces have reportedly killed at least 150 protesters so far.
