Belgium’s nationwide strike has reached its third day, shutting down public transport, schools, hospitals, airports, and private-sector services. With garbage uncollected for days, piles of waste now line the streets.
Unions launched the three-day strike to protest federal economic reforms, including scrapping early retirement, denying future tenure to irregular-hour public workers, and tightening unemployment benefits. Police, healthcare staff, and cleaning workers also joined, leaving some stations understaffed.
Prime Minister Bart De Wever, who recently pushed through a budget deal, drew criticism after saying he “felt no pressure” from the strike. Authorities expect daily life to resume on Thursday.
