Near-Disaster Averted in Washington DC Gas Leak Explosion

Washington DC narrowly escaped a major disaster as an explosion occurred approximately 15 minutes after the evacuation of a building and an adjacent nursery where a gas leak was detected. Firefighters evacuated the Anacostia district building and the nursery with 16 children around 10:00 local time. Two explosions followed the evacuation, causing a fire that produced visible smoke from kilometers away.

The Washington Fire Department reported one person slightly injured by debris, while the evacuated children remained unharmed. The market building was destroyed, and two neighboring structures suffered damage. Firefighters brought the blaze under control hours later.

Poland has launched temporary border checks at 65 locations along its frontiers with Germany and Lithuania to curb illegal migration. The operation, running from July 7 to August 5, involves 52 checkpoints on the German border and 13 on the Lithuanian side, supported by 5,000 soldiers, police, and drones.

Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said the checks target human smugglers, assuring that regular travelers “have nothing to fear.” The move, authorized under the Schengen Border Code, follows rising tensions with Germany over asylum policies and illegal crossings.

In early results, 1 person was denied entry at the German border, and an Estonian national was detained at the Lithuanian border for smuggling four migrants. The Polish Border Guard also reported 200 illegal crossing attempts on the Belarus border between July 4–6.
