Nearly 17 feet of snow fell in Sierra Nevada, US

After extreme drought on summer, nearly 17 feet of snow fell in December in the Sierra Nevada located at California state of US. Scientists stated that this month was “the snowiest December” ever, and the snow could enough to break old records. Andrew Schwartz, the lead scientist and station manager of the Sierra snow laboratory, pointed out that more snow is needed despite the record. Schwartz told that they are really concerned about the upcoming months not having as many storms, even though the event amazing so far. He stated that if they don’t get more snow, they are still below what they would expect for the entire winter.  Schwartz pointed out that this means they can contribute to the drought rather than resolving it.

On the other hand, 238 inches of snow fell in Sierra Nevada in January 2017. According to records of the California Department of Water Resources, snowpack in the Sierra Nevada accounts for 30% of California’s fresh water supply in an average year.
