Kami Rita, a 55-year-old Sherpa from Nepal, has climbed Mount Everest for the 31st time, breaking his own world record. He reached the 8,849-meter summit on Saturday, continuing a climbing streak that began in 1994.
Known for summiting Everest nearly every year, Kami Rita holds the record for the most ascents of the world’s highest peak. His closest rival, fellow Sherpa Pasang Dawa, has climbed Everest 29 times.
More than 8,000 people have reached Everest’s summit since it was first conquered in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
