Wildfires in the US state of New Mexico have ravaged 20,000 acres, destroyed 1,400 buildings, and resulted in one death. The South Fork Fire, igniting in the Mescalero Apache tribal area Monday morning, quickly spread, consuming 15,000 acres. Another blaze, the Salt Fire, erupted near Ruidoso village in Lincoln County, leading to the evacuation of 7,800 people and burning 5,000 acres. Strong winds are exacerbating both fires, which remain uncontrolled. Shelters have been set up for evacuees. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared an emergency in the affected regions.
