Following the seizure of power by Niger’s Presidential Guard, which is backed by the Niger Armed Forces, supporters launched violent protests, attacking the ruling party’s headquarters and setting vehicles on fire. Police used tear gas to control the crowds. The successor to the ousted President Mohamed Bazoum is unclear, though the Presidential Guard Regiment is commanded by General Omar Tchiani. This coup is the seventh in Africa since 2020.
