North Korea said it conducted a hypersonic missile test, with missiles flying about 1,000 kilometers before hitting targets in the East Sea (Sea of Japan). The test was overseen by leader Kim Jong-un, who said it confirmed key defense technologies and the need to strengthen offensive weapons. Kim cited rising global security risks and said such tests are meant to boost nuclear deterrence. Japan and South Korea said the launch marked North Korea’s first missile test of the year.
