Floods occurred in the Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia Romagna regions of northern Italy as a result of two rivers overflowing after heavy rainfall. Water emptying from the river submerged vehicles and buildings, causing drivers to strand in underpasses and on the roads.
An official in Milan, the most affected area during the disaster, announced that the city received 120-130 mm of rainfall in one day, the highest rainfall amount in the last 170 years.
