The New York Police Department Muslim Police Association hosted its first Crescent Lighting Ceremony at NYPD headquarters in Manhattan on March 3, marking the third day of Ramadan. The event aimed to strengthen ties among the department’s 3,000 Muslim officers, promote inclusivity, and highlight the significance of Ramadan.
Chief Officer Ali Hamutoğlu emphasized the growing presence of Muslim officers in the NYPD, noting that around 100 are of Turkish origin. Association President Waheed Akhtar said the crescent symbolizes faith and unity, fostering awareness of Ramadan within the department.
The event brought together NYPD Chief Jessica Tisch, Imam Tahir Kukaj, Rabbi Alvin Kaas, and Pastor David Cassato, who all underscored the importance of interfaith solidarity. Participants prayed together, followed by an iftar dinner where officers from different faiths shared the spiritual atmosphere of Ramadan.
The NYPD Muslim Police Association, known for its annual iftar gatherings since 2018, plans to host 700-800 guests at its next event on March 20, with senior NYPD officials in attendance. The Crescent Lighting Ceremony is expected to become a new tradition within the department.
