Olaf Scholz, Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, has become the 9th Chancellor of Germany. The German lawmakers at the Bundestag backed Olaf’s appointment by 395 votes to 303, making him the 4th Chancellor of SPD origin, after Willy Brandt, Helmut Schmidt and Gerhard Schröder. A coalition of Social Democratic Party (SPD), Green party (Die Gruenen) and Free Democratic Party (FDP) will be formed.
Scholz will go to Bellevue Palace to receive approval from President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Scholz, who will then return to parliament, will take over as Chancellor from Angela Merkel, who has been in office for 16 years.
