Opposition’s Severe Protests Leaves 2 Dead in Venezuela

The claim of Venezuelan presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez, candidate of the opposition alliance, United Democratic Platform, that he received more votes than Nicolas Maduro, head of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, in the presidential election held on Sunday brought opposition supporters to the streets in 20 states. The severe protests caused the deaths of 2 people in the states of Tachira and Maracay.

According to the Venezuelan National Electoral Council, Maduro received 51.2 percent of the votes, 7 points more than Gonzales. However, according to opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, their data showed that Maduro received 2.75 million votes and Gonzalez received 6.27 million votes.
