A total of 157 false killer whales have washed ashore near the Arthur River on the west coast of Tasmania, Australia, prompting authorities to take action.

The Tasmanian Marine Conservation Program reported that 67 of the whales had died and the remaining 90 were to be euthanized as the unfavorable conditions in the area made their rescue impossible.

The rescue team reportedly tried to refloat two of the whales, but they were washed back to shore due to strong winds and rough seas.

“We estimate they have been stranded for 24 to 48 hours,” said Brendon Clark of Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Services.
