Hajj pilgrims are flocking to Jannat al-Mu’alla Cemetery, just 2 km from the Kaaba, ahead of the Arafat. Known as Mecca’s largest historical cemetery, it holds the graves of many companions and relatives of the Prophet Muhammad, including his wife Khadija, sons Abdullah and Qasim, and his grandfather Abdulmuttalib.
The cemetery, open daily after afternoon prayers, is especially visited by pilgrims from Türkiye, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Once home to domed tombs built during the Ottoman era, including one commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, all structures were demolished in 1926. Tombstones were later transferred to Riyadh.
Turkish pilgrims often visit the site on Thursdays to Saturdays, with some discovering the graves of their own ancestors.
